Silver-ions. Haven’t heard of them? Don’t worry, throughout this blog, we will explain what silver-ions are, how they work, and why you need to switch to Ingeo with silver-ion infused fabrics as a healthy alternative option to many other fabrics.
Silver has been researched for decades, discovering it’s natural antibacterial properties. Only recently did we start infusing our fabrics with silver-ions to provide the public with nature-based innovation for contemporary home goods and clothing. Tsinghua University conducted a study on the effects of silver-ions on two different types of bacteria: E. coli and S. aureus. Both of these bacteria have been researched for decades and the microorganisms can make people sick. The study found that when these two types of bacteria were exposed to silver-ions, they lost their ability to multiply and inactivated the proteins in bacteria. Meaning, the silver-ion technology not only killed the bacteria but also did not support further bacterial growth.
At Avani, all of our products are made of an Ingeo fabric, which is derived from the natural starches in corn. During the extraction process, pellets are broken down into a polymer and spun, creating a fully-sustainable, biodegradable, and compostable fabric. We then carefully infuse silver-ions in the pellets. During this process, the pellets go through the same process, making a polymer which can then be spun into many different final products. The fabric is still Ingeo, however, the silver-ion infusion makes the fabric antimicrobial and hypoallergenic, as it does not support the proliferation of microbes such as bacteria, viruses, or fungi.
We conducted a wash test with an independent testing lab (Hohenstein Research Institute), and found that after 100 washings, silver-ion infused fabric retained a bacteria and virus kill rate of 99.9%. This is significantly better performance then silver infused cotton fabric where the antimicrobial properties are lost after only two or three washes.
