How much does custom jewelry cost?

23 Sep.,2023

When you really want a certain piece of jewelry, you can close your eyes and see it shine in your mind. You can always visit a conventional jewelry store to find something similar to your idea, but you know that any options presented to you would fall flat from the initial image you had pictured. This is why Donj Jewellery customizes jewelry for its clients.

The perfect piece of jewelry is often personalized and specific to yourself or the person you are buying it for. In this guide we walk you through the custom jewelry process and explain what you can expect to pay and how long it takes to create custom jewelry pieces.

What is custom jewelry?

Custom jewelry is a piece of jewelry that is created to your specifications and requests. It is completely customizable, and the design process ensures that you are left with a one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry that meets all of your expectations and requirements.

There are different ways you can customize your finished piece. For example, if you love a design that jewelry stores already sell but want to make it a little more personal, you can recreate that design and simply engrave a message onto it. Alternatively, if you want to create your own piece from scratch, that is also an option. You can customize any kind of jewelry you wish, from a custom engagement ring to a custom bracelet, to a custom necklace… the opportunities are endless.

Karat vs. Carat: What is the difference?

How much does a custom ring cost?

The cost of a custom ring varies depending on what you want. For example, some precious metals are more expensive than others. What you can expect to pay will depend on your desires.

As a rough guide to pricing, you can expect to pay anywhere between $ 500 and $ 2,000 for a custom ring. The main factors that go into determining the price of your ring are things such as how complex the design is (the simpler it is, the cheaper it will be). Other things that can affect custom engagement ring cost are the size of the ring, the number of precious stones used and the type of stones used.

Jewelers also factor in labor and design costs so it is important to remember that all of these different factors add up. That should not put you off investing in custom pieces, as the perfect piece can be made within a budget if you make smart design decisions. A transparent jeweler, like Donj, will give you a transparent price.

How much do other types of custom jewelry cost?

The cost of other types of custom jewelry depends on the same factors that determine the price of a custom ring. Therefore, if you are creating a bracelet or necklace made from 18k yellow gold, are using an expensive type of stone, and have a complex design, it is going to cost you far more.

At the end of the day, custom jewelry costs depend on the custom designs and the requirements you have. We recommend you look into similar designs to the ones you have in mind to use the existing price as an estimate. Of course, it will be more than a premade design, but it can help you get a rough idea of pricing.

How long does it take to create a custom piece of jewelry?

All in all, from start to finish, creating a piece of custom jewelry can take anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 weeks. Again, lots of different factors contribute to how long it takes to create a custom piece of jewelry, with the intricacy and the size being the main contributing factors.

The design process is very simple and usually only takes a maximum of a week, possibly even less if you know exactly what you want. You will work with a professional jewelry designer who will listen to what you want and create your specific design. There might be some back and forth during this process, which is what takes time, but it will ensure that you get exactly what you want in the end!

Customer jewelry process

The entire process of creating a custom piece of jewelry is one that has the customer at the heart. Our aim is to create a piece of jewelry that you are going to love and cherish, so we put everything into making it perfect for you.

Below is a run-through of the customer jewelry process:

1. Initial meeting

The first step in the custom jewelry design process is for our designer to sit down with you and listen to what you want. We take into consideration everything you tell us, from the design you want to your budget, to help you come up with something that works.

2. CAD modeling

Once you have finalized the design with our designer, we then input your idea into a 3D modeling software that allows us to see exactly what your ring or piece of jewelry will look like. We then share these realistic renderings with you to show you how your idea would look in real life. At this point you can make any final modifications.

3. Casting

As soon as your CAD design is fully approved, it is time to start creating the physical ring itself. The CAD design will be recreated exactly from the casting machine. The method is very simple, as once the design is final, a cast is made and molten material is put into it to create the piece of jewelry you approved. For instance, if you wanted a gold ring, molten gold would be poured into the mold.

4. Handcrafting

Although the casting gets the majority of the ring created, a custom diamond engagement ring, or any kind of ring, can be more intricate and require handcrafting skills for a perfect finish. Therefore, the next step is to have professional and talented jewelry designers/ makers put the finishing hand touches on the ring, carving in any intricacies.

5. Set the stone

The next step is to set the stone on the custom piece of jewelry. Engagement rings are traditionally made with diamonds, although recent jewelry trends have been seeing less obvious stone choices, which has created a new wave of accent stones being used, such as rubies, sapphires, and emeralds.

6. Finishes

Now that the design is complete and the stone is set in the band, the final step is to add the finish that you want. Whether you want a shine or more of a matte look to your ring, we will finish it in the exact way that you want it.
