Topic: How Many Axles? Need Quick Answer... Posted By: mr. ed on 05/04/11 07:41pm

Hello, friends. Quick question. I'm towing my fiver through Denver tomorrow and I'm considering taking the toll road (E-470) from I-70 to I-76 in order to avoid heavy traffic. In order to calculate cost I need to know how many axles I have. My TV is a typical 1-ton pickup (single rear wheels) and my fiver has 4 wheels. I think that adds up to 3 axles but I'm not sure I've calculated that right. What's the correct answer? Thanks in advance....

If your wheels/axles look like my picture, you have 4 axles.
2 on the truck and 2 on the trailer.

Thanks for the quick answers. I wasn't sure if all the axles were considered or if it just applied to commercial vehicles. I just calculated the toll to be $18. At that price I think I'll choose another route!

I bet your avatar could of stomped out the answer if you asked him nicely. LOL

Pickups have 2 axles. Sometimes the rear axle is a dually, with 4 tires.

Tandem axle trailers have 2 axles, which is typical of travel trailers. Some tandem axle trailers have dual tires, which is 8 tires and 2 axles, which is typical of large commercial trucking trailers.

Single axle trailers have 1 axle. Some single axle trailers have dual tires, which is 4 tires and one axle.

Been there done that. Won't do that no more! Paid the $18 without knowing the trap I had entered!

An aside: I did that in 2007 with a dually pulling a 5th wheel. $36 for the trip.

The worst of it is that there is no tollgate. If you don't have the appropriate transponder, you will be mailed a bill, and they don't give you a lot of time to pay it. If you are on an extended trip, the time might well be up before you even see the bill. Then they start tacking on fines, very significant fines.

We pay gas tax, I wish everone would stop paying and driveing toll roads. If we keep paying they will keep putting on tolls,,,more tax. ($5 toll to go to town for coffee? $5 bucks to come home?????????)

Well, disregard what I posted. I took 470 from I-25 N to I-25 S and went through about five toll booths. I guess I was on another road.

I don't like tolls either but in the bigger picture folks are cutting back on milage and buying more fuel efficent vehicles. In most states the tax is so many cents per gallon. Fewer gallons mean less money. The money has to come from somewhere.

Where would you suggest we get the money and to be proactive what groups would be against it?

What he meant is that the toll booths are no longer manned and automatically read you licence plate as you pass through - giving the impression that there is no toll. However, there are plenty of signs everywhere!

Personally, I live near E470 and avoid it whenever possible. I tow double most of the time and with 5 axles that gets even more expensive. If there are road works or heavy traffic on I225/I25 then I may sometimes take it, but it has to be a good reason for me to spend an extra $20 or so to go those 20 miles.

Mr. Ed,

If you are southbound - watch out for low bridges on I-25. The 23rd street bridge (about center of town) is 13'-0" in the left lane. I'm 13'-3". Technically, if you are over 13' you are supposed to route east on I-70 and then south on I-225 until you reconnect on I-25. I take I-25 and just stay in the center lane when I see the warning signs.

Northbound no issue.

PS - the toll is flat rate for the tow vehicle, and then that cost again for each additional axle. Your rig would equal 3 vehicle. When tripled towed it was the cost of 5 vehicles at each booth. I go around now.

A number of years ago I got into a heated discussion with a toll booth attendent on the Illinois tollway as to the number of axles on my dually. On this trip I was not towing any trailer but on the way to pick one up and the discussion revolved around how Illinois counts a dually as having three axles. The toll booth attendent insisted that I had three axles because of the duals; where as I kept trying to explain that the duals were attached to the REAR axle. So combined with the front axle I would have two axles that the toll would apply. Needless to say once the attendent felt that she was losing the debate she flagged a Trooper over and I was ordered to pay or face arrest.

Have avoided that toll road since.

"SoCalDesertRider" needs to add that one to his definitions!.

Same for everyone else who thought it was an easy question, LOL!

"IL. Pickup with 2 axles and dual wheels on one of the axles = 3 axles"

Here is another good one! In Conneticut on I95 south, and only going south there is a bridge that you must pay a toll if you have a trailer. $5.00 no matter the size trailer. At the time I had a small SUV with a pop up and at the other booth was a Harley with one of those small motorcycle trailers. We are both paying the 5 bucks and I look to my left and a fully loaded tri-axle dump truck bouncing across the bridge for FREE!!

New York charged me for being over a certain height. I guess I was disturbing too much of their air.

On the Illinois Tollways, 2 axles and 6 tires (a dually) is a "small truck". It's a class meant for small commercial vehicles. There are also medium trucks (3 or 4 axles), and heavy trucks (5 axles or more). Trailer combos are included in those. So anyone pulling a one or two axle trailer is a medium truck.

The tolls for duallies (small trucks) are almost 4x the tolls for an auto or SRW truck. Someone pulling a trailer (medium truck) pays about 6x the auto rate.

Greetings from Scottsbluff, NE. I breezed through Denver earlier today by staying on I-25 all the way to I-76. Going through Denver about 10-10:30 AM was a good time (after rush hour). AND, I'm happy to have saved the $18 by avoiding the toll road .
